Titicaca Lake “Sahuiňa Project”

Code SA105

Overview

This program is based on Lake Titicaca, near to Copacabana. The local Community Sahiuna have developed a project which aims to revive the Culture of URUS IRUITU an ancient culture of people who constructed Islands made entirely from reeds, which they then built their homes on.

Location

This program is based in the Community of Sahuina - Province of Manco Kapac of the Department of La Paz, Municipality of Copacabana in the shores of Lake Titicaca, about 4 hours from the town centre of La Paz. Volunteers will work directly with the community and the placement and accommodation will be in Copacabana (a beautiful town on the shores of Titicaca).
Project life
On arrival in La Paz city, one of the representatives will pick you up and will bring you to the hotel for one night in La Paz, and then we will bring you to your project.
If you are already in La Paz, we will bring you to the project in Sawina - Copacabana. Once you have settled in and unpacked, we will introduce you to the Community in the project and they will give you a nice “Welcome” and they will introduce their selves and will show you the surroundings. Although basic Spanish is not obligatory, any practice before going would be helpful.
You will join the Community in their daily routine. Your average working day will be from 7:30am until 4pm with an hour and a half for lunch. Volunteers will help the community with the day-to-day tasks on the Islands, notably showing the tourists around some of the Islands, and they will also really appreciate your help building the Community Lodge.
Depending on what individual projects are going on at the time of your arrival, you will be informed about the type of help that will be required from you a few weeks before you arrive. There are always different tasks needing to be done.
Accommodation and food
During the two weeks placement, you will be living in a Hostel in Copacabana or in the same Sawina town, near to Kasani. A continental breakfast will be provided and you will have facilities to make lunch and dinner. The main town near the Community is Copacabana although in Kasani you will find all amenities as well. We require the volunteers to stay for a minimum of 15 days. DA
